Plasticizers (softening agents)
The main softening agents are bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates. Bisphenol A is a polycarbonate and epoxy resin that is found in many plastics. Phthalates are vinyl-based products found in vinyl tiles, wallpaper and shower curtains. They are banned in Canada for use in baby bottles and in other articles for children.
- Dangers
They are possibly carcinogenic and may be at the source of some sexual dysfunctions. They are suspected in playing a role in attention-deficit disorders and hyperactivity and may undermine the development of the fetus. - What can I do to protect myself from plasticizers?
It is simply sufficient to avoid products that contain plasticizers: adhesives, paints, epoxy-based coatings, products that contain fragrances and soft plastics.
