In brief, the greywater heat recovery system allows the preheating of cold water with the heat from waste water. It transmits the heat of the running water during a shower (normally lost in the drains) to cold water from the water system or from the well.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
By circulating through a copper drain section — an excellent heat conductor — around which a copper pipe is molded and wound, the water can thus increase in heat from 9°C to 25°C (48°F to 77 °F). This decreases the water heater load and, in the end, the electricity bill.
The system operates by gravity. Therefore, it must be installed directly under the shower. No pump, no moving parts, no maintenance required, no possible contamination, for a heat recovery of approximately 40%.
However, the principle only works if the demand for hot water is done simultaneously with a hot water discharge flowing at the same place, as in the case of using a shower. For the bath, the dishwasher and the washing machine, the unit is therefore useless
